In light of the recent WOTC fan content policy, it is illegal for me to continue working on the postcards the I know a lot of people have loved, due to something that is unfortunate and incredibly unorthodox from a company of wizards size, a ban on convention sold merchandise.
You can find the whole article here
, but I will just take the snippet I will be discussing here and copy/paste it.
Q: May I sell my Fan Content online or at conventions?
A: No. We are fine with you producing Fan Content for your own enjoyment, to give away as a gift, or to post pictures of online. But we don’t allow anyone to sell Wizards-related content without our permission
From the perspective of someone who does know a lot about art tables at conventions and how fanart being sold there is remotely legal, a company of this size should not care about fan content being sold. Because here's the thing, Wizards makes beyond the amount of money that any fan art in the fandom could make. Usually, from the perspective of these larger companies, fanart is so low on their radar that getting roughly 50-60 USD back in profit after printing is just no big deal. Fan artists at tables are able to get away with these activities because, in a way, it is symbiotic, the artist gets some money from the big name, while at the same time being someone who can debunk falsehoods about the company and its community at hand. Nintendo doesn't care if you sell like 30 5$ prints of Mario. They don't know you exist! Until you get caught in their line of sight, steal actual games from them (destroying their own profits), Or make the news from your content that you are selling or using adrev on, they don't CARE.
This is just beyond comprehension to me, and I personally do not like or get it. I hope you guys stay around even after this has happened, all of my MTG art will be unwatermarked and put up for download, along with the chandra sketch.
Right now it is just Not possible and a waste of resources I have to put into preparing myself to finish them at the moment with these new rules and laws.
I am so sorry..
PS. By the way, this???
“[Title of your Fan Content] is unofficial Fan Content permitted under the Fan Content Policy. Not approved/endorsed by Wizards. Portions of the materials used are property of Wizards of the Coast. ©Wizards of the Coast LLC.”
That's also horseshit. I should not have to put a literal fucking copypasta under my art.
